DUAL CALIBER .22/.32 WHEELER AMERICAN ARMS SWIVEL BREECH Deringer Antique
1 of 3,000 SUPERPOSED .22 & .32 Combination
Here we present an antique American Arms Swivel Barrel Dual Caliber Deringer made circa the early 1870s in Boston, Massachusetts. Production began shortly after the close of the American Civil War and lasted through the late 1870s, seeing only about 3,000 produced during that time. Deringers of all sorts had by then become a common mode of pocket-sized firepower, though small revolvers were quickly eclipsing the single shot design. H.F. Wheeler was the man responsible for this design, which featured superposed double barrels that swiveled to access the next shot.
This specimen features dual caliber barrels: one is in .32 rimfire, while the other is .22 rimfire. The “top” barrel flat on the .32 caliber side reads “AMERICAN ARMS CO. BOSTON. MASS.”, and the .22 caliber side reads “WHEELER’S PAT. OCT. 31. 1865 – JUNE. 19. 1866”. Each side has its own front sight, made of German silver.
The overall condition is fine. Original blue finish. Excellent action. The bores are in good condition with strong rifling. The grips are in great shape.
