Product Description
1823 PRUSSIAN Antique POTSDAM ARMORY Model 1809 FLINTLOCK Musket
Here we present an antique Prussian Potsdam Model 1809 Flintlock Musket, manufactured circa 1823. The Potsdam musket was the standard infantry weapon of the Royal Prussian Army from the 18th century until the military reforms of the 1840s. Four models were produced at Potsdam, including the Model 1723, the Model 1740, the Model 1809, as is this one, and the Model 1831.
The Model 1809 was originally made in the flintlock format with production after 1831 shifting to the more modern and reliable percussion firing system. This musket would have been used in Prussian conflicts during the 1840s and 50s, including the Egyptian-Ottoman War, the Greater Poland Uprising, the Revolutions of 1848, and the First Schleswig War. Though thoroughly obsolete by the time of the American Civil War muskets like this were purchased and used during the conflict due to lack of domestic arms.
The overall condition is very good. Brown finish. The action is strong. The bore is smooth and dim. The stock shows inspection marks on the left stock flat. Both the barrel and stock are marked “P 77”. The barrel likewise has inspection markings and is dated “1823”. The ramrod is a handmade replacement.
