16 Gauge WESTLEY RICHARDS NEW BOND STREET LONDON Shotgun Double SxS Antique
English Muzzleloading Shotgun for the Upland Field!
Here we present an antique Westley Richards Double Barrel Side by Side Shotgun, made in Birmingham, England, circa the 1840s. William Westley Richards established his prestigious company in 1812, at 22 years of age, at 82 High Street in Birmingham. His high-end London shop was established in 1815 at 170 New Bond Street. William’s son, Westley Richards, joined his father in business at the age of 26 and continued to grow the business with his own ideas and patents. It was he who was responsible for the design of the breechloading Monkey Tail Carbine in 1858. The company is still operating and is one of the few that survive to this day making fine sporting firearms.
This one is in 16 gauge with 25 3/8” barrels, very nice and compact for the field. The locks are both engraved with upland game scenes. There is a German silver star with a small cap trap in the underside of the butt stock. Length of pull is 14 1/8” and drop at the heel is 2 ½”.
The overall condition is very good. Original finish and patina. Very nice Damascus twist on the barrels. The actions are strong and crisp. The bores are smooth and untouched with good barrel wall thickness. The stock has nice grain and is hand-checkered. There are some stable chips under each of the locks towards the rear. A very nice example of a 19th Century Westley Richards muzzleloading shotgun!
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
