Scarce ENGRAVED Antique W. WURFFLEIN “Creedmoor” Parlor & Gallery Gun
Low Velocity “FLOBERT” Style Firearm for INDOOR USE
Here we present an antique William Andrew Wurfflein “Creedmoor” Parlor & Gallery Rifle, made circa the 1870s in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Andrew Wurfflein arrived in New York from Germany in 1832 and settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By 1840, he was granted U.S. citizenship. In 1844, his brother John, also a gunsmith by trade, immigrated. They worked together for some time, and were two of the six that founded the Shuetzen Verein, a prominent German shooting club in Philadelphia. Their work included rifles and pistols, including close copies of their Philadelphia neighbor Henry Deringer’s hit pocket pistol. In 1870, William Wurfflein is first registered as a gunsmith and took over his father Andrew’s business when he retired in that same year.
The Creedmoor Rifle Range was established after the New York Legislature and the newly formed National Rifle Association combined in 1872 to acquire 70 acres of farmland from Bernardus Hendrickson Creed for long-distance rifle shooting and the holding of shooting competitions. The range officially opened on June 21, 1873. The Central Railroad of Long Island established a railway station nearby, with trains running from Hunter’s Point, with connecting boat service to 34th Street and the East River, allowing access from New York City.
This type of Gallery and Parlor rifles, also referred to as “Floberts”, were very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These would be set up in drinking establishments, at carnivals and even in people’s houses. Most floberts used ammunition that only used the primer as the propellant. These were very low velocity firearms and cartridges, making them relatively safe and quiet.
