RARE COLT Model 1855 Revolving Rifle .44 Caliber ELISHA K. ROOT Civil War
Circa Late-1850s Repeating Rifle!
Here we present an antique Colt Model 1855 Full Stock Revolving Rifle, manufactured circa 1855 through 1864 in Hartford, Connecticut. These sidehammers—both handguns and longarms—also go by the nickname “Root” thanks to the involvement of Elisha K. Root, who was instrumental to the early success of Colt Manufacturing.
Known specimens have been presented to the aforementioned Mr. Root, Secretary of War John B. Floyd, the Major and Second Kings of Siam, as well as members of the Russian Imperial Court. Needless to say, these were highly valued weapons back in their day and an absolute treasure to collectors today. Most of the sporting rifles are half stock models with researchers estimating approximately 1,000 to 1,500 being produced, while the full stocked Sporting Rifles are thought to number much less. Although the actual number is unknown, it is estimated to be somewhere around 300 total being produced. “The Book of Colt Firearms” lists their number as “limited,” while “Colt: An American Legend” doesn’t list a production number at all, instead erring on the side of caution to say that only 18,300 long guns of all types were produced. In any case, they are a rare find. These are classified by The Book of Colt Firearms as “the utmost rarity.”
The overall condition is very good. Refinished. The action is strong. The bore is in very good condition with sharp rifling. The stock is smooth and solid throughout. Numbers match.
