RARE Antique COLT Hartford English DRAGOON Revolver

One of Only About 700 Made

Here we present an antique Colt Hartford English Dragoon Percussion Revolver, manufactured circa 1857 in Hartford, Connecticut. Only 700 of this variant were produced. It was an interesting group of revolvers for several reasons, one of which is that it was numbered in its own range and has a wide array of features for such a small batch since Colt used new-old stock to complete them. Colt’s Dragoons experienced some of the harshest conditions the mid-19th century had to offer, and it is amazing that any survived, in any condition. This pistol was designed for use by horse-mounted rifleman, and it is so much pistol that you will want a horse to carry it for you. This pistol weighs in at over 4 pounds.

This Dragoon’s parts were manufactured in Hartford, Connecticut, despite the New York barrel address, then shipped over the Atlantic to be finished and assembled in Colt’s London factory. There are British proof marks on the barrel. Very interesting indeed is the fact that about 200 of these revolvers came back across the “pond” to participate in the American Civil War during a period of time when both Union and Confederacy were desperate for small arms. The top of the barrel is marked “ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY”. “COLTS PATENT” on the left side of the frame. Serial number is within the correct range for this run of revolvers.

The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces bear a smooth, gray patina with some light pitting. The markings are legible. The serial numbers match. The walnut grips are in great shape. The bore is clear with strong rifling. The action on this revolver is excellent. Here is a very handsome Colt Dragoon that went to Europe and came back again!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 7-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .44 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
