Product Description

“PAPA NAMBU” Pistol Japanese TOKYO GAS & ELECTRIC 8mm NAVY TGE C&R RARE

World War I Era MILITARY Sidearm!

Here we present a C&R Japanese Military “Papa Nambu” Pistol, made Tokyo Gas & Electric circa 1916-1923. The Nambu pistols were a series of semi-automatic pistols originally produced by the Koishikawa Arsenal, later known as the Tokyo Artillery Arsenal. Later production “Papas” were produced by Tokyo Gas & Electric, as this example is marked. This one is marked with the circled “TGE” on the chamber. It is also marked with the “Navy Anchor”. This example is referred to by Derby & Brown as a second variation naval contract pistol, circa 1916-1923, with the anchor marking to the left of the serial number. This exact example is listed by serial number on page 376 of Derby & Brown’s Japanese Military Cartridge Handguns 1893-1945.

This example is a very scarce Model 1904 Large Nambu pistol commonly called the Papa Nambu. There were only approximately 7000 total produced before production changed over to the later standard Type 14 model. This example was produced under an Army contract and is so marked with the Kanji characters on the left side of the frame. The right side of the frame has the Kanji model marking over the serial number. These pistols were equipped with adjustable tangent rear sights on top calibrated from 100 to 500 meters, and a fixed inverted “V” front sight.

The first type of Nambu that was produced was the Type A. Type A Nambus were produced from 1903-1906 and had differences from those produced after 1906. And, among collectors, the original Nambus are commonly referred to as Grandpa Nambus. The ‘Grandpa’ Type A was produced until around serial number 2400. A later version of the Type A Nambu, the Type A Modified, also known as the Papa Nambu, was produced until around serial number 7000. Production of the Type A Nambu ceased as of 1923 and was replaced by the Type 14, which was both cheaper and more effective. The Nambu Type A somewhat resembles the Luger pistol in appearance, but this is superficial.

The overall condition is good. Dark patina throughout most of the gun. The action is excellent. The bore is brown with virtually no rifling visible and there is a good amount of cosmoline or grease present. The grips are solid and sharply checkered. No magazine comes with this pistol. The right side is lightly import marked. A rare Papa Nambu pistol!
