Product Description

BATTLE SCENE Relief Engraved EURO Percussion Pistol

Wedge Shaped Grip Covered w Figured Brass Fittings

Here we present an exquisite antique Percussion Pistol, originally made as a flintlock circa the 1700s, then updated to percussion circa the 1820s. This pistol would have been worn in the belt or in a saddle holster. Its likely owner would have been wealthy, and possibly a military officer. Its most unique feature may be the grip, which narrows dramatically to the pommel swell. The rest of the stock is carved to accent the hardware. This pistol is elaborately decorated with dainty, floral engraving on the first third of the barrel. The engraving has been accented with gold. The barrel begins as octagonal, gently fading into round. The trigger guard, pommel, side plate, and initial placard all feature high relief engraving, which include both decorative scroll as well as human and animal figures engaging in battle. The bottom of the trigger guard depicts a single rider blowing a trumpet while sitting atop his horse. The side plate depicts two riders facing off, with the rider on the left having a mortar and halberd behind him. The left side of the pommel depicts a rider turning to shoot his pursuer while fleeing. The right side of the pommel depicts the fleeing rider falling from the saddle as his horse turns into the pursuing animal.

The overall condition of this pistol is fine. Traces of original blue finish remains in places on the barrel. A very good amount of the gold leaf remains as well. The rest of the metal surfaces are smooth with a smoky patina. The maker’s mark in the center of the lock is partially obscured by light pitting. The stock is very nicely figured, and remains solid and smooth. The bore is smooth and clean. The hammer spur was repaired via brazing during the period of use. The action is excellent and strong. Here is a fantastic artifact that is as much a work of art as it is weapon.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 10 inches.

Caliber: .52
