HOERSTER “Eisenhauer” Antique CIVIL WAR Era U.S. Staff & Field OFFICER’S Sword
GERMAN Made PATRIOTIC THEMED Blade
Here we present an antique Civil War Era Hoerster “Eisenhauer” U.S. Staff & Field Officer’s Sword, made circa the late 1850s to the early 1860s in Solingen, Germany. The sword features a curved blade with a US marked brass basket hilt and blade. The grip is wrapped in leather and braided wire. The blade is 33 inches with an overall length at 38-3/4 inches. This saber would likely have been used in the American Civil War by Union Officers and the Spanish American war later in the century.
These types of swords were produced by various German makers and exported here for sale by military goods dealers selling to officers, who were obliged to acquire their own arms, uniforms, and equipment. This has an iron hilt and scabbard, making it the weapon preferred by some officers for service in the field.
There are photographs of a U.S. soldier taken during the Spanish American War with one of these in hand. The blade is very nicely etched with an array of U.S. themed symbology and scrollwork. The handle is the original sharkskin, bound in braided wire.
The overall condition is good. Finish on the blade has matured to a dull patina and the etchings remain visible. Most components that make up the hilt, have varying movement around the tang. The twisted brass wire is tight around the grip. Markings are legible.
