GLASSES CASE CONCEALED COLT DERINGER 41 THUER PISTOL British English Hidden
DISGUISED WATSON & SONS LONDON EYEGLASS CASE
Here we present a C&R W. Watson & Sons Opticians London Colt Third Model Thuer Deringer with an Eyeglasses Case with a Hidden Compartment. The interior of the lid is marked “W. WATSON & SONS LTD OPTICIANS 313. HIGH HOLBORN LONDON.” Upon opening, the case reveals an old but very well preserved pair of bifocals. Looking a little deeper, one can pull up the tray holding the eyeglasses to reveal a bottom compartment with the pistol and 5 rounds of .41 rimfire.
William Watson was a maker of optical instruments, such as microscopes, telescopes, spinthariscopes, among other things such as lanterns, glasses, wooden view cameras, binoculars, and even movie projectors. Later they were involved with early radiography. The business began with William in 1837 in London and closed circa 1969.
This pistol, also known as the New Model Deringer, was made between 1875 and 1912. The Thuer was far and away the most successful of the three types of Colt Deringers. These were very refined, very handy conceal and carry pieces all the way through 1912.
The overall condition is near fine. Original nickel and blue finish. Excellent action and nice bore with good rifling. Dimensions of the case are 6” x 3” x 1-7/8” tall. The case is in fantastic condition. This is a wonderful and rare set!
