ETCHED BLADE Light Artillery/Infantry Officer’s AMERICAN EAGLE Pommel SWORD
Early to Mid-1800s Saber w/BRASS HILT & BONE GRIP
Here we present an antique American Eagle Head Light Artillery Officer’s / Infantry Officer’s Pattern Saber, manufactured circa the early to mid-1800s. The ‘Eagle Head” sword was popularized during the American Revolutionary War and was one of the signature weapons of the young United States through the War of 1812 and into the 1830s.
On swords where the motifs/displays are still visible, the actual branch of service the sword was intended for can be determined. Artillery would display panels depicting cannons. Infantry would normally display panels depicting an infantryman. Cavalry blades would indicate mounted horsemen. Militia officers also carried these types, and their blade motif could be something all encompassing, such as a panoply of arms.
The overall condition is good. Straight blade with some of the original fire blue and gold finishes remaining. Patriotic panoplies. The maker mark is “Warranted/BERGER”. Solid brass hilt cast with an eagle head pommel. Ivory grip.
Overall length: 34-3/8 inches.
Blade length: 29-1/4 inches.
