ENGRAVED “W P” Signed Antique Full-Stock .40 Caliber Percussion LONG RIFLE
With T. DAVIDSON & CO. Lock and OCTAGON BARREL
Here we present an antique Engraved “W P” Signed Full Stock Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century. It’s possible, if not likely, that the “WP” stands for William Pannebaker Jr. who, along with his father William Pannebaker Sr. worked out of Trenton, New Jersey somewhere around 1860 to 1865. This rifle has a “T. Davidson & Co.” lock. Davidson was an active lock maker between 1834 and 1866.
Its stout octagonal barrel is in .40 caliber, large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. Many makers’ names of the so-called Kentucky long rifles have been lost over time. This rifle is one such example.
The overall condition is good. The action functions properly. The bore is in good shape for its age. This example maintains a solid stock with some chipping around the action. A repair or two has been made to the buttstock toe of which remain stable. An inscription is present atop the barrel, but is not fully legible.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 39 inches.
Caliber: .40 Percussion
