Here we present an antique Smith Marked Half Stock Percussion Large Bore Fowling Piece, made circa the mid-19th Century likely in Birmingham, England. Birmingham was the epicenter for English gunmaking all the way through the turn of the century. This is an English fowling piece that is elegant in its simplicity and practicality. This hammer gun would have been used primarily for putting game on the table or, if pressed, defending one’s homestead.
The overall condition is good. Original patina. Strong action. The bore is smooth and in good shape for its age. This example sports a solid stock with nice wrist checkering. “SMITH” marked lock with traditional floral engravings. “LONDON” marked barrel. Escutcheons missing from around the barrel pins.
