ENGRAVED & INLAID Antique FRENCH Style .54 FLINTLOCK Flared Barrel Pistol
Flintlock SELF DEFENSE BLUNDERBUSS Style Pistol
Here we present an antique Flared Barrel Flintlock Belt/Coat Pistol, made circa the early 19th Century likely in or around Paris, France. This large bore flintlock pistol was used primarily as a self-defense weapon. Their effective range was short, and they were frequently used as an adjunct to a sword. Pistols in this era were usually smoothbore, although some rifled pistols were produced. They came in a variety of sizes with the smallest being less than 6 inches and the largest ranging to over 20 inches.
The mid-sized ones, such as this one, are what would be carried in the busy streets of Paris or London in the pocket of a gentleman’s coat during the tumultuous times of the early 1800’s in Western Europe.
The overall condition is very good. Strong action. The bore is in very good shape for its age. Light engravings and wire inlays make this piece aesthetically impressive. Some gold remains on the barrel. The walnut stock is in good shpe with light handling and only minor dings.
