Product Description

ENGRAVED, GOLD, SILVER, NICKEL, Carved IVORY “BABY RUSSIAN” S&W 38 Revolver

Rare, Early 4-Digit Baby Russian 1st Model Circa 1876

Here we present an antique Deluxe 1st Model Smith & Wesson “Baby Russian” .38 S&W Single Action Revolver, made circa 1876-77 in Springfield, Massachusetts. This one has been treated to beautiful scroll engraving, premium finishes such as gold on the hammer & silver on the cylinder, as well as nickel plate throughout, stocked with the very attractive eagle & snake carved ivory grips.

The Smith & Wesson First Models were produced from 1876 to 1877 and was Smith & Wesson’s first .38 caliber revolver. The first model of the .38 Single Action can be identified by its smooth barrel (lacking fluting), and the long extractor shroud similar to the Smith & Wesson Model 3 Russian pistol, which lent it the nickname “Baby Russian”. Serial numbers range from 1 through to 25,548 between 1876 and 1877.

Interestingly, Smith & Wesson actually developed the cartridge for this revolver first (146 grains at 740 fps), and then designed the revolver around it. The result was a 5-shot, top-break action initially offered with 3.25 inch and 4 inch barrels. It used the same simultaneous extractor as the No.3 revolvers.

The overall condition is very fine. Original nickel and silver finish preserved. Excellent action. Bright rifled bore. Both grips are in good shape with average handling wear. The right grip is carved with an eagle. Sharply engraved with traditional floral designs. Visible markings are legible. Numbers match.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 3-1/4 inches.

Caliber: .38 S&W

Overall condition as seen in photos.
