ENGRAVED British Antique H. W. MORTIMER .68 Percussion Conversion Pistol
“GUNMAKERS TO HIS MAJESTY” Marked Barrel
Here we present an antique H. W. Mortimer Marked Conversion Pistol made circa the late 1700s to early 1800s in London, England. This example would have started out life as a flintlock and converted to the more reliable percussion firing system. Henry William Mortimer had a shop at 89 Fleet Street, London, from 1780 until 1835 when the business name was changed to H.W. Mortimer and Sons from 1835 to 1855. H.W. Mortimer bore a Royal Warrant having supplied weapons to the Royal family and was well known for supplying weapons to The Royal Mail Coaches. He was probably the best known and one of the most revered gun makers of the period.
The quality of this piece is impeccable, from the checkered grip to the intricate engraving. The top of the barrel is marked “GUNMAKERS TO HIS MAJESTY”. To have this title was nothing short of amazing, knowing how good one must have been to be given that title.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape. Solid stock/grip. A stable crack is present on the left stock flat. Markings are legible. This example is refinished. Lightly engraved metal parts.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
