ENGRAVED Antique Italian MICHELONI Superposed .54 Caliber PERCUSSION Pistol
BRESCIA Manufactured Mid-1800s OVER/UNDER Pistol
Here we present an antique Micheloni of Brescia Superposed Over/Under Percussion Pocket Pistol made circa the mid-1800s in Brescia, Italy. Gunsmith Giovanni Micheloni of Brescia in Italy worked from 1815 until 1889. This example of an over and under double barrel percussion pistol has 4-3/4inch barrels, with the ramrod tucked between the two barrels on the right hand side. The top of the upper barrel is marked Micheloni a Brescia, and the fittings are all nicely engraved with spiral floral designs. The carved wood grip which supports the two back action percussion locks and the beautiful engraving completes the weapon. Dating to the 1840s-50s, the steel trigger guard covers two triggers, one for each barrel.
Pistols of all sorts had by then become a common mode of pocket-sized firepower, though small revolvers were quickly eclipsing the single shot design. This would have been intended as a self-defense gun. In a day when the single shot pistol was popular, this over/under pistol would have been a very handy self-defense weapon to have around, having two shots to fire off instead of one!
The overall condition is good. Excellent action. Both bores are in good shape for their ages. Beautiful Damascus barrels. The stock/grip is nicely carved and contains less than average wear. Sharp engravings.
