c1836 ELI WHITNEY US Model 1816/22 FLINTLOCK Musket .69 NEW HAVEN Antique
One of 24,000 Muskets Produced, with SOCKET BAYONET
Here we present an antique Whitney Arms Co. U.S. Contract Model 1816/1822 Flintlock Musket, manufactured circa 1836 at the Whitney Armory in New Haven, Connecticut. Philos & Eli Whitney Blake were the nephews of Eli Whitney Sr. and were believed to be the trustees of the Whitney Armory from 1823 until Eli Whitney Jr. coming of age in 1842. This is the improved version of the U.S. Model 1816 that was manufactured by the Whitney Armory from 1822 to 1841 under two contracts with the U.S. government. This is a second contract musket and is dated “1836” on the lock with an ”1834” date on the tang.
There were 24,000 muskets made under this contract in the 1830s through 1841. Many of these muskets were converted to percussion just prior to the Civil War, though there were many that were used in the war that were still in their flintlock format, as is this example. Though this musket was 35 years old when the war broke out, it was still a great musket and much higher quality than many of the imports that would be purchased in Europe and issued stateside.
The overall condition is good. Weathered and gray patina throughout. The action is strong and the trigger is a bit stiff. The bore is untouched since the period of use, smooth and coated with dust. The walnut stock is solid. The left stock flat has a faint cartouche. The top of the wrist is stamped with the number “42”. The left side of the butt stock has a hole, purpose unknown. This musket has a collection tag on the trigger guard.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 42 inches.
