Antique ENGRAVED “THE UNIVERSAL” 12 Gauge Double Barrel SxS HAMMER Shotgun
Proofed in Birmingham, England
Here we present an antique Factory Engraved “The Universal” Double Barrel Side by Side Shotgun, made circa the early 1890s in Birmingham, England.
England and Belgium were the epicenter for European gunmaking all the way through the turn of the century. This is a hunter’s weapon that is elegant in its simplicity and practicality. This double barrel hammer gun would have been primarily a firearm designed for hunting or taken out on a Saturday afternoon for a little trap/skeet shooting! And, it was always good to have a shotgun around the house just in case ne’er do wells happened to show up with ill intentions.
The overall condition is good. The actions are strong. The bores are smooth with some scattered pitting. The stock shows much use with a chip at the toe that has been repaired by a graft and the inlaid tip of the splinter forearm is absent. Gouge behind the left lock. Nice engraving, especially on the underside of the frame. Birmingham proofed black powder. The numbers match.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
