Antique 1850s BELGIAN Percussion LARGE BORE .69 “MANSTOPPER” Belt Pistol
BRASS BARRELED Self-defense BELT/POCKET Pistol
Here we present an antique Belgian Large Bore .69 Percussion Belt Pistol, made circa the 1850s, in Liege, Belgium. Both London and Liege have long been manufacturing centers for the world’s arms trade. This small type of pistol was very popular from the 18th and into the 19th Centuries in Europe, as well as the colonies that features a large .69 caliber bore that would have been worn on the belt or holstered as it was possibly carried into battle after being privately purchased. This is a neat old pistol and one can easily imagine the sight of its gaping bore would certainly be a deterrent to would be scoundrels. It was of course made primarily for self-defense against ne’er do wells, especially in cities or traveling around the countryside.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape for its age. This example is lightly engraved throughout. A portion of the forend has been replaced with a piece of antique bone. The grip has a crack on both sides that shows slight movement with hand pressure. Liege proofed left barrel flat.
