Product Description

18th Century GERMANIC Antique FLINTLOCK HORSE Pistol by TANNER .61 Caliber

Gorgeous Mid-1700s Prussian Military Pistol

Here we present a Prussian Flintlock Horse Pistol by Tanner, made circa the mid-18th Century. This was a pistol made for fighting. It is quite long at 20-1/2 inches with a 13-1/2 inch, part-octagonal, part-round barrel. This one features a full-length stock with ornate brass hardware. The lock is beveled at the edges with a multi-faceted flash pan, all of iron. The center of the lock is marked “TANNER”. The ramrod is tipped in horn and the cap on the muzzle end of the stock would have matched. The pommel is very large and bulbous, which would have assisted in grip but is also decorative and could be used as a bludgeon if worse came to worst. The side plate is lacy and delicate in style, featuring two infinity dragons eating their own tails. There is a thumb plate of brass at the top of the wrist that is vaguely heart-shaped. The stock is carved throughout to accent the brass hardware. Lovely finials on the ramrod tube and trigger guard.

This pistol was made by Johann Casimir Tanner (1691-1764) of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen and Herzberg (moved c1738) in Prussia during the reign of Frederick the Great, who was responsible for strengthening and unifying Prussia into a formidable power militarily. Tanner was the first superintendent of a new arms manufactory in the Hanoverian Electorate at Herzberg (c1739), which is probably why he moved there. His descendants would follow in his footsteps as great gunmakers themselves, notably Carl Daniel Tanner (1791-1858) and his sons. Possible conflicts this pistol may have witnessed were the War of Austrian Succession as well as the Seven Years’ War (Silesian Wars 1, 2 & 3).

The overall condition is fine. The barrel has been expertly refinished. There is a minor repair at the tail of the sideplate as well as the front of the lock plate—both stable and blended nicely. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. The bore is in nice shape. All markings are sharp and clear. Here is a museum quality 18th Century Prussian pistol from the time of Frederick the Great by one of the premiere gunmakers of the time.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 13-1/2 inches.
