c1902 mfg. COLT LIGHTNING .22 Short SLIDE ACTION Rifle C&R Gallery Hartford
Octagonal Barrel Pump Action Rimfire
Here we present a C&R Colt Lightning Small Frame Slide Action Rifle, made in 1902, in Hartford, Connecticut. This was Colt’s entry into the pistol caliber rifle and carbine market, which was absolutely dominated by Winchester at this time. Pistol caliber rifles were instrumental in the hands of those settling the West, as they were able to carry one type of ammunition to feed both their long gun and their sidearm. It also enabled a rifle to be stoked with the maximum number of cartridges, sacrificing power for capacity, useful when outnumbered at close range. The Colt Lightning was fairly successful, but never approached the numbers that Winchester’s lever actions were able to achieve. This example is chambered in .22 rimfire, a very light and handy cartridge for hunting small game or just going out to do some plinking.
The overall condition is good. Original blue finish, mainly on the barrel with case colors still bright on the hammer. The rampant Colt trademark is clear on the left side of the receiver. The action is strong. The bore is bright with nice rifling. The forestock has been repaired. The buttstock has several short, stable splits off the back of both top and bottom tangs. Otherwise showing use and remaining solid.
