1783 SILVER HALLMARKED FLINTLOCK PISTOL by WHEELER Thomas Jefferson Antique
Brass Queen Anne Style Boxlock with Silver Mask & Inlay
Here we present an antique Queen Anne Style Flintlock Pistol by Wheeler, made in Birmingham, England in 1783. This little pistol is nearly identical to a pair owned by President Thomas Jefferson and in the collection of his estate at Monticello. Of brass construction, this boxlock pistol bears the name “WHEELER” on one side and “LONDON” on the other. It has a segmented barrel with a smooth bore measuring about .44 caliber. Pre-1813 Birmingham proofs. The grip is ornamented with delicate silver wire inlay as well as a silver “grotesque mask” pommel cap hallmarked with a prowling lion (Stirling silver .925 fineness), anchor (Birmingham trade), boxed “L” (for a year date of 1783), and “CF” (the maker). This would have been a handsome piece carried for the purpose of self-protection in the period of use. This one was produced during the last year of the American Revolutionary War.
The overall condition is fine. Nice patina on both the brass and silver. Markings are clear. The action is excellent. The bore is smooth and patinated. The grip is solid. A fantastic piece of history!
