BRITISH B.S.A. Double Barrel 12 g. Hammerless HUNTING/SPORTING Shotgun C&R
SIDE x SIDE GAME GETTING Shotgun
Here Ancestry Guns presents a C&R Birmingham Small Arms 12 Gauge Double Barrel Hammerless Shotgun, manufactured in Birmingham, England between 1925-1954. These guns have very little information available. There was an article about BSA shotguns in the November/December 2013 issue saying that the guns were made between the end of World War I and the start of World War II, with a total of about 46,000 shotguns made. There is also a brief chapter about BSA shotguns in the book “Sidelocks & Boxlocks” by Goeffrey Botthroyd. Basically, they were made to be a utilitarian grade gun. Sometimes described as a “gamekeeper’s gun,” implying that it was a gun used by the working staff of an English estate, rather than the hand-made fine guns the gentry used. Even having a buttplate was a charged option. BSA was one of the first gun makers to use machine-made, more-or-less interchangeable parts.
This gun features a double trigger system. The early doubles used two triggers, one for each barrel, located front to back inside the trigger guard. The index finger was used to pull either trigger, as having two fingers inside the trigger guard can cause a very undesirable recoil-induced double-discharge. Double-trigger designs are typically set up for right-handed users. In double-trigger designs, it is often possible to pull both triggers at once, firing both barrels simultaneously, though this is generally not recommended as it doubles the recoil, battering both shotgun and shooter, particularly if it was unanticipated or unintended. Discharging both barrels at the same time has long been a hunting trick employed by hunters using 8 gauge elephant shotguns, firing the two two-ounce slugs for sheer stopping power at close range.
The overall condition is fine. Original finishes. Excellent action. Shiny bores, remain smooth. Fine stock with light handling wear and sharp checkering. Markings are clear and legible. Numbers match. A small dent is present on the right barrel.
