Product Description

YOUMANS LANCASTER FLINTLOCK LONG RIFLE  ANDREW JACKSON War of 1812  Antique

Full-Stock .42 Caliber Pennsylvania Rifle

Here we present an antique Flintlock Long Rifle by J. Youmans, made circa the late-18th Century in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Per The So Called “Kentucky Rifle,” As Made In Lancaster County by D.F. Magee ‘“Andrew Jackson, “Old Hickory” loved as the apple of his eye, a “Youmans” which he owned throughout his life, and his name became immortal when he won the battle of New Orleans and the war of 1812, by arming his soldiers exclusively with Lancaster County rifles.”’ Youmans was also listed in the same as one of rifle makers of the Revolutionary period by Hensel and Diffenderfer (two of the founders of the Lancaster State Historical Society) along with Gaspard, Dechert, Busch, Lehman, Loder, Riddle, Sneider, Stengel, Franck, Follechet, Dreppard, Grescheim, and Leonard. The Youmans family were based in Lancaster but part of the family eventually moved to North Carolina where they continued the family tradition for great rifles.

This rifle features a full-length stock with an octagonal barrel held by wedges. The butt stock has a large, engraved brass patchbox that open by button in the top of the butt plate. Engraved sideplate. German silver roundel atop the wrist of the stock. “J.YOUMANS” is marked on the top barrel flat. Single trigger. Original flintlock.

The overall condition is very good. Original finish. The action is excellent. The bore is in good condition with good rifling. The stock is in great shape. This is a fantastic piece of history from a family of gunmakers that made guns in the American colonies through the American War for Independence as well as the War of 1812.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 36-1/4 inches.
