World War II SMF THIRD REICH German Military FALLSCHIRMJAGER GRAVITY Knife
Known as the “FLIERS FOLDING KNIFE” by STOCKER & Co.
Here we present a German Third Reich SMF, or Stocker & Company, Gravity Knife, made in Solingen, Germany between 1937 and the close of World War II. The “Gravity Knife” was carried by German flying personnel, including paratroopers (Fallschirmjager) in World War II. Officially known as the Fliegerkappmesser, or “Fliers Folding Knife”, these were designed as a general purpose survival utility knife for pilots, air crew, and paratroopers. There were two main variants, which are the early “Type 1”, which didn’t break down, and the “Type 2” that one could disassemble and troubleshoot if it became jammed.
First produced in 1937, the often so called “Fallschirmjägermesser” was initially issued to German flight crews and paratroops, primarily for the purpose of cutting a trapped parachutist from his rigging in case he landed with a tangled parachute or became entangled in trees or in the water with the shroud lines. The spike was used to untie knots while packing the parachutes. Luftwaffe air crew members used the knife to cut themselves out of their harnesses or cut through the aluminum hull of the aircraft after a crash landing.
