WORLD WAR II Era ISHAPORE No. 1 Mk. III 410 Single Shot SHOTGUN Conversion
Short Magazine Lee-Enfield with Shotgun CONVERSION
Here we present a C&R Short Magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE) No. 1 MK III Rifle, made circa 1915 at the Ishapore Rifle Factory, north of Calcutta and converted to a single shot 410 Shotgun in 1939. In 1904, a rifle factory was established by the British at Ichhapur, anglicized as Ishapore, and began production of the Lee–Enfield rifle, which has continued more or less until the mid-1980s, and possibly the present. The Lee-Enfield is a bolt-action, magazine fed, repeating rifle that served as the main firearm used by the military forces of the British Empire and Commonwealth during the first half of the 20th century.
The best-known Lee–Enfield rifle, the SMLE Mk III, was introduced on January 26, 1907. During the First World War, the SMLE Mk III was found to be too complicated and expensive to manufacture, and demand outpaced the supply. In late 1915 the Mk III* was introduced incorporating several changes, the most prominent of which were the deletion of the magazine cut-off mechanism, which when engaged permits the feeding and extraction of single cartridges only while keeping the cartridges in the magazine in reserve, and the long-range volley sights. Rifles with some or all of these features present are found, as the changes were implemented at different times in different factories and as stocks of parts were depleted. The magazine cut-off was reinstated after the First World War ended, and not entirely dispensed with in manufacturing until 1933. Some rifles with cut-offs actually remained into the 1960s.
The overall condition is good. Strong and smooth action, with a mirror-bright bore. The buttstock has a repair at the heel and there are thin, stable cracks on the toe. The stock is generally solid, showing typical handling wear with some dents and dings. A small repair is present on the left fore-end, and all markings are clearly legible. The example has been refurbished. The barrel is numbered 814.
