WORLD WAR I German HEBEL Model 1894 Flare Signal Pistol GREIFELT & COMPANY
Manufactured in Suhl for the German Military
Here we present an Early Great War example of a German Hebel Model 1894 Single Shot Flare Pistol by Greifelt & Company of Suhl, Germany. This gun, called “Hebel” (meaning “lever” in German) by collectors around the world, was a painstakingly manufactured weapon with a modern design. Most of the parts were hand fitted and overall was poorly balanced. Often the leaf springs were subject to breaking, but this example is in great shape with a strong action!
It is one of the few pistols for which we can determine with some precision the year of adoption, 1894, and this thanks to a German instruction manual dated April 30 of that same year. Ahead of its time, it was initially distributed to the pioneers, then soon extended to the military. There are a multitude of stamped markings in different places. This example is the scarce Greifelt and Company model. They were a famous family of gunsmiths established in Suhl in 1885.
The overall condition is fine. Strong action, although the extractor does not activate when the level is pressed. The bore is in good shape for its age and well suited for a flare. Solid grips with only an average amount of handling. Sharp markings throughout.
This would be a fantastic addition to your collection of World War I militaria or of military flare pistols.
