Product Description

WORLD WAR I Era Antique AMBERG ARSENAL 8mm GEWEHR 88 German MILITARY Rifle

1897 Dated Model 1888 “COMMISSION RIFLE”

Here we present an antique Imperial German Amberg Arsenal Gewehr 88, also referred to as the Model 88 Commission Rifle, made in 1897 in the Kingdon of Bavaria in Amberg, Germany with a production run between 1888 and 1899. The Gewehr 88 was a late 19th-century German bolt action rifle, adopted in 1888.

The rifle was one of many weapons in the arms race between the Germanic states and France, and with Europe in general. Later models, such as this 88/05 replaced the use of en-bloc clips with stripper clips and went on to serve in World War I to a limited degree. Unlike many German service rifles before and after, it was not developed by Mauser, but rather the arms commission, and Mauser was one of the few major arms manufacturers in Germany that did not produce Gewehr 88s.

The overall condition is good. Smooth dark patina. This example is refinished. Strong action. Mostly bright bore with nice rifling. Legible markings. A letter “K” is marked on the bottom of the wrist. The stock is solid all around with average evidence of handling wear. “S” marked barrel.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 29-1/2 inches.

Caliber: 8x56mmR Mauser

Overall condition as seen in photos.
