WORLD WAR I Dutch HEMBRUG M1895 “Number 4 Old Model” BICYCLE Carbine C&R
1916 Dated World War I & II Infantry Rifle w/SLING
Here we present a C&R Dutch Hembrug Geweer Model 1895 “Number 4 Old Model” Bolt Action Bicycle Carbine, made in 1916 in Hembrug, Zaandam in the Netherlands. The Karabijn No.4 was a shortened M.95 designed in 1909 and created for the Dutch bicycle troops that had a wooden fairing on the left side of the magazine. The “bicycle troops” were infantry soldiers who maneuvered on, or more often, between battlefields using military bicycles. The term dates from the late 19th century, when the “safety bicycle” became popular in Europe, the United States, and Australia. Historically, bicycles lessened the need for horses, fuel and vehicle maintenance. Though their use has waned over the years in many armies, they continue to be used in unconventional armies such as militias.
The overall condition is good. Gray patina throughout. The action is excellent. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. The stock shows use and remains solid. The stock has a 1917 dated stamp on the right side of the butt stock. There is an eagle stamped on the underside of the stock behind the trigger guard. The stock is numbered to the gun but the bolt differs. Cleaning rod is absent. Not import marked.
