Here we present a C&R Eddystone British Contract Pattern 1914 Enfield British Bolt Action Rifle, made circa 1916 in Eddystone, Pennsylvania. The Pattern 14 was a British service rifle of the First World War period. The need for additional small arms combined with a shortage of spare industrial capacity led the British government to contract with United States commercial arms manufacturers Winchester, Remington, and Eddystone, which was a subsidiary of Remington set up principally to manufacture the Pattern 14, to produce the P14 for the British, which continued until the United States entered the war in 1917. Winchester manufactured 235,293 rifles, Remington manufactured 400,000, and Eddystone manufactured 600,000, totaling 1,235,293 rifles.

The Eddystone Pattern 1914 was the rifle that the U.S. Model 1917 was patterned after that both Remington, Eddystone (a subsidiary of Remington), and Winchester were producing during the Great War. This was prior to direct American intervention, which occurred in April of 1917, in the worldwide conflict. When the U.S. entered the war, they too needed all the small arms production they could muster for the war effort. Rather than retooling these factories to produce the American Model 1903, the U.S. Ordnance Department simply elected to adapt the Enfield Pattern 1914 to American specifications, primarily chambering the rifle for .30-06 Springfield, creating the U.S. Model 1917. These went to arm the American Expeditionary Force in Europe during WWI.

The Eddystone Arsenal was a Baldwin Locomotive Works subsidiary located in Eddystone, Pennsylvania that produced military hardware for the Allies of World War I. As orders from combatants exceeded the production capacity of Baldwin’s Philadelphia factory, this manufacturing facility was built in Eddystone, Pennsylvania. When the first world war ended, this manufacturing complex was used for locomotive manufacturing as Baldwin’s Eddystone Plant.

The overall condition is good. Robust action. Bright rifled bore. The wood is in very good shape. There’s an “I E/STAR” Marked on the right buttstock. “Fraiser/MI” Import marked receiver. Mixed numbers although the bolt and receiver match. “ERA” marked receiver. This example is Arsenal refurbished.
