Here we present an antique Long Rifle by Lauck, made circa the early-to-mid-1800s in Winchester, Virginia. The Lauck family produced multiple gunmakers in the Shenandoah Valley. Of the Lauck family of gunmakers, Gewirz lists Daniel, James, & Peter (1753), Simon (1795) Jacob (1816), John (1820), William (1840), and William P. (1850). The family were known for their choice of wood for their stocks, as well as the incised carving done, with “C scroll” typical of their work. Large, pierced brass patchboxes with a 4-petaled flower finial were another hallmark. According to the Preservation of Historic Winchester group, the house and smithy of Simon Lauck still stands on South Loudoun Street. Simon, along with his brothers Peter (he owned the Red Lion Tavern) & Abraham fought in the Revolutionary War under General Washington. Local tradition has it that they were part of Daniel Morgan’s honor guard and, having German as one of their languages, were able to translate between their officers and captured Hessian soldiers. Gluckman & Satterlee note that at least one Lauck made long rifle is known to have been used by a Confederate soldier during the American Civil War, and it is highly likely that many more were as well, given the prolificity of the family’s production and the geographical position of this gunmaking center of Virginia.

The overall condition is very good. Original finish. The action is strong. The bore is dusty and untouched with thin rifling. The barrel is signed “J. Lauck” on the top flat. The full-length stock is solid with nice striped maple grain and bearing incised scrolls. Nice, large, pierced patchbox typical of the family. This is a wonderful example of a Shenandoah rifle and of the Lauck family’s work in particular.
