Product Description
WILD WEST Era COLT Single Shot “THUER” .41 RF Derringer C&R HIDEOUT PISTOL
Late 1800s/Early 1900s Self-Defense Pistol
Here we present a C&R Colt Third Model Thuer Derringer, also known as the New Model Derringer, made between 1875 and 1912. In 1870, Colt acquired National Arms Company and introduced the Colt’s First Model Derringer, its first single-shot pistol, followed by the Colt’s Second Model. The example with serial number “13965” likely dates from the 1880s-90s but is classified as Curio & Relic (C&R) due to the lack of definitive production data.
Both models were chambered for .41 rimfire cartridges with a counter-clockwise rotating barrel for loading. In the same year, F. Alexander Thuer patented a different design featuring a rightward pivoting barrel and a spring-loaded catch for operation, which also acted as an automatic ejector. This model, known as the Thuer Model or Third Model Derringer, became the most successful of the three designs and remained popular until 1912, when semi-automatic firearms began to dominate the market.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. The barrel finish has settled into a brown patina. Good bore for its age with serviceable rifling. Both grips have been refinished. Legible markings.
