Product Description

WILD WEST Antique COLT M1878 10 Gauge Side x Side HAMMER Shotgun SCATTERGUN

ENGRAVED Double Barrel Made in 1881

Here we present an antique Engraved Colt Model 1878 Double Barrel Hammer Shotgun, manufactured in Hartford, Connecticut in 1881. The Model 1878 was made from 1878 to 1889, with approximately 22,683 guns manufactured. These double barrel shotguns were an exposed hammer double gun that competed closely with high-end Parker Brothers guns. The Colt Model 1878 Double-Barrel Hammer Shotgun is considered to be, if not the finest, one of the finest American double-barrel shotguns ever made. The Model 1878 Shotgun was the highest priced item in the Colt line and was available in almost any grade as a special-order item. This double trigger shotgun is a 10-gauge solid rib with 28-inch barrels.

According to one early source, “the Model 1878 Hammer Gun ranks among the best grade doubles produced in the entire American arms trade. The limited number completed, and the great pains devoted to handling specific orders from often fussy shooters means that a considerable degree of quality and variety is evident in the Model 1878 series.”

One can probably assume that this shotgun was used by a settler heading west during the westward expansion. It would’ve been used for putting food on the table or for protecting the homestead.

The overall condition is good. Original brown patina. Robust action. The bore is in good shape and has dimmed. This example sports a solid stock. A stable wrist crack is present atop the wrist and remains stable. Smoothed checkering. Numbers match. Markings are legible.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrels are 28 inches.

Caliber: 10 Gauge

Length of pull: 14-1/4 inches.

Overall condition as seen in photos.
