WAR OF 1812 Era British Pattern 1796 CAVALRY Saber w/WOOD GRIP
The British Standard through the Napoleonic Period
Here we present an antique War of 1812 and Napoleonic Era British Pattern 1796 Light Cavalry Saber, manufactured circa the late 1700s to early 1800s likely in Birmingham, England. This saber was developed as a result of British experience gained during the French Revolutionary War. The 1796 was designed with inspiration from Eastern Europe and points further and was a British standard through the War of 1812.
The Pattern 1796 light cavalry saber is a sword that was used primarily by British light dragoons and hussars, and King’s German Legion light cavalry during the Napoleonic Wars. It was adopted by the Prussians (as the 1811 pattern or “Blücher sabre”) and used by Portuguese and Spanish cavalry.
The overall condition is good. The blade is mostly straight with a mild wave in the last 8 inches. Dark patina throughout. The grip is down to the wood and is showing its age and likely weathering, remains stable despite the crack.
