WAR OF 1812 British Pattern 1796 INFANTRY OFFICER’S Saber NAPOLEONIC ERA
GOLD ACCENTED ETCHING w/FOLDING COUNTER-GUARD
Here we present an antique War of 1812 and Napoleonic Era British Pattern 1796 Infantry Officer’s Saber, manufactured circa the late 1700s to early 1800s in Birmingham, England. This saber was developed as a result of British experience gained during the French Revolutionary War. The 1796 was designed with inspiration from Eastern Europe and points further and was a British standard through the War of 1812.
The sword has a straight single-edged fullered blade bearing the ‘GR’ (George I) cypher under the royal crown on the blade. It features an overall length of 38-1/2 inches with a 32 inch blade with gold accented wire etching, a gilt brass hilt, and a folding counter-guard along with a wood grip.
The Pattern 1796 Infantry Officer’s saber is a sword that was used primarily by officers of the British light dragoons and hussars during the Napoleonic Wars.
The overall condition is good. Much of the blue blade finish has been preserved. Some movement is observed around the grip and guard. A slight bend/dent is found at the tip of the blade.
