VICE ADMIRAL TOM BURBRIDGE US NAVY 1852 Officer’s Sword World War II Korea

Here we present a U.S. Model 1852 Naval Officer’s Sword, Inscribed to T. Burbridge Hill, made circa 1922 in Solingen, Germany. Tom Burbridge Hill was born 12 December 1898 in Fort Worth, Texas. His family moved while he was still a child to Cripple Creek, Colorado. He attended Colorado School of Mines before being accepted to the United States Naval Academy from which he graduated in 1922. During World War 2 he served as gunnery officer on the battleship USS North Carolina in the Solomon Islands campaign and was combat readiness officer on Admiral Nimitz’ staff at the signing of the Japanese surrender at Tokyo Bay 2 September 1945. After the war, he was Captain on the USS Missouri, 1946-1947. In December 1948 he was promoted to Rear Admiral. During the Korean War he was Commander of Amphibious Forces in the Far East and commanded Joint Task Force 3 in atomic experiments (1951) before he was Chief of Staff to the Commander of the Pacific Fleet, Admiral Arthur W. Radford. In 1952 he assumed command as Superintendent of the Naval Gun Factory in Washington Navy Yard, Washington, D.C. He passed away in 1957 at age 58 in Bethesda, Maryland and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

The overall condition is fine. Bright, straight blade with clear etchings. Amidst the etchings on the blade is the name “T. Burbridge Hill” in Gothic lettering. The throat of the scabbard has intertwining initials “TBH”. The ricasso is marked “GERMANY” and “PROVED” as this was made in Solingen in the post-Great War period. The white rayskin grip and wire wrap are tight. The golden knot is in fine condition. The hilt is tight to the blade. The leather scabbard is in remarkably good shape for 100+ years old, but do take care to withdraw the sword vertically so as not to bend or break the leather portions of the scabbard. A fantastic piece of history!
