Product Description

VERY RARE FACTORY ENGRAVED 3rd Model COLT DRAGOON .44 Caliber Revolver 1852

Noted by R.L. Wilson in his Book Colt Engraving

Here we present an antique Colt 3rd Model Dragoon Revolver, manufactured in 1852 in Hartford, Connecticut. This revolver is listed by serial number in antique firearm scholar R.L. Wilson’s books The Book of Colt Engraving on page 29 & Colt Engraving on page 36. In these pages he illustrates the rare combination of the particular “donut” style of scroll engraving and panel scene on the barrel. In this case, the panel scene is of a deer on the run. This one features both and was at the time of the publishing of these works in the eminent collection of George R. Repaire.

In addition to the beautiful factory engraving, this one has “F105” stamped on the trigger guard by the serial number and on the cylinder. Nicely figured walnut grips.

The Third Model was first offered in 1851 and continued production through 1861, for a total of 10,500. The revolver is in .44 caliber, weighs 4 pounds and 2 ounces and has a part round and part octagonal barrel. The main difference between a Second and Third Model Dragoon is the change from a square-back trigger-guard to a rounded version. The barrel and cylinder were blued with casehardened frame, hammer and loading lever. The revolver was furnished with one-piece walnut grips which were varnished for the commercial market and oil-stained for the military contracts.

Colt’s Dragoons experienced some of the harshest conditions the mid-19th century had to offer, and it is amazing that any survived, in any condition. This pistol was designed for use by horse-mounted riflemen, and it is so much pistol that you will want a horse to carry it for you because of its significant weight. This one would have seen use during the American Civil War.

The overall condition is good. The action is strong. The bore is dark towards the muzzle, but semi-bright overall. The numbers match. This example is solid all around. This is a great opportunity to add one of Samuel Colt’s most recognized inventions to your collection, a factory engraved and extremely rare, documented Civil War era Colt Dragoon!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 7-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .44

Overall condition as seen in photos.
