Very Nice JEAN DUCHATEAU Belgian “VELO DOG” Revolver C&R FOLDING TRIGGER
Belgian Made “REVOLVER de POCHE”
Here we present a C&R Jean Duchateau “Velo Dog” Folding Trigger Revolver made in Liege, Belgium circa the early 1900s. In the late 19th and early 20th century, Liège dominated the gunmaking industry. In the book “Liege Gunmakers Through Their Work. 1800-1950, Vol. I” by Alain Daubresse, he maintains that: “When Liège production reached its summit, more than half of the firearms made in the world came from Liège…”
The Velodog, also known as a “Revolver de Poche, was a French design by Charles-François Galand specifically made for carry by cyclists to defend themselves against dogs. In fact, the name “Velodog” combines the word “Velocipede” with “Dog”, which is quite interesting. It was copied & produced all over Europe into the beginning of the 20th Century. It features a small size, a smooth external hammer, and folding trigger.
Another feature on many models Velo-Dogs is the lack of a trigger guard, and a trigger that folds into the body of the weapon when not in use. For the more humane, there were cartridges loaded with cayenne pepper or dust, or which had bullets made from wax, wood or cork.
The overall condition is fine. Original finish. Strong action, although the cylinder has a bit of wiggle when locked up. Bright bore. Markings are legible. Various proof marks can be found throughout this example. Both grips are in fine shape with light handling wear.
