Product Description

UNIT MARKED Antique German F. von DREYSE M1883 “REICHS” Revolver WWI & WWII

Officer’s Sidearm Used in Both World Wars

Here we present an antique Unit Marked “32.R.2.1.” German F. von Dreyse Model 1883 “Reichsrevolver” Single Action Revolver chambered in 10.55mm, made circa 1885 in Sommerda, Germany. The Model 1879 Reichsrevolver, or Reichs Commission Revolver Model 1879 and the Model 1883 were both service revolvers used by the Imperial German Army from 1879 to 1908, when they were superseded by the classic Luger 9mm semi-automatic. They were both hefty, solid frame single action revolvers. It was the first centerfire revolver adopted by the fledgling German Empire, which was a simple design in line with similar European revolvers of the period.

The two versions of the revolver differ in barrel length with the Model 1879 having a 7-1/8-inch barrel and the Model 1883 having a 4-5/8-inch barrel. Although the design was dated, the weapon was extremely robust, and they were still used through World War I and until 1945 by the security of the customs administration. A lanyard ring was typically seen under the grip handle for attaching the weapon to the uniform. The 1883 is named the “Officer’s Model” by some due to the earlier Model 1879 being named the “Cavalry Model” or “Trooper Model”, which were not official designations. Besides F. von Dreyse, various arsenals produced these guns, including Mauser, and some government arsenals such as Erfurt. This six-shot gun was loaded via a gate on the right side similar to a conventional single action, but it was slow to unload because empties had to be removed with the help of a small rod, after the cylinder had been removed from the gun. The cylinder was taken out by the hammer being at half cock and the center axis pin removed. Aside from the World Wars, it also saw action in the Boxer Rebellion and various colonial skirmishes.

The overall condition is very good. Original blue finish. Very good bore with strong rifling and excellent action. The grips are solid. Numbers match. Dated “[18]85”.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 4-5/8 inches.

Caliber: 10.55mm

Overall condition as seen in photos.
