UNIT MARKED 1917 mfr. WWI DWM Model 1914 “ARTILLERY” LUGER Pistol Great War
19th Landwehr Infanterie Regiment Kompagnie 3 Waffe 7
Here we present a World War I Infantry Unit Marked “1917” Date Model 1914 Artillery Luger Pistol, made in 1917 by DWM in Berlin, Germany. The front strap of the grip frame is marked “L.J.R.19.3.K.7.” for the 19th Landwehr Infanterie Regiment 3rd Company Gun No. 7.
Basing his design off Hugo Borchardt’s seminal C93, Georg Luger successfully brought Borchardt’s work to practical fruition. While finding buyers for the C93 seemed an exercise in futility, the new Luger Pistol found many countries eager to test it and even adopt it. There are many variations in this field of collecting, but relatively few major changes in overall design from beginning to end. The Luger is certainly one of the most iconic firearms in history, made so by its association with Germany during both World Wars. The top of the chamber is The Great War dated “1917”. The top of the toggle is marked “DWM”. The right side of the frame and barrel bears German military acceptance marks.
The adoption of the Lange Pistole, aka the “Artillery Luger”, was authorized by the Kaiser on July 2, 1913. This P08 variation was equipped with a 200 mm (7.9 in) barrel, an 8-position tangent rear sight (calibrated to 800 meters (870 yd)) and a board-type shoulder stock with an attached leather holster. In the event of close combat, the pistol was intended to be used as a carbine with the shoulder stock attached to a lug mounted on the heel of the pistol frame. When set for long range use the rear sight element visibly moves to the left to compensate for spin drift. This pistol was intended for use by German artillery units who could not be encumbered by the long and heavy K.98 rifle.
The overall condition is very good. Re-blued. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The numbers match with the exception of the side plate. Neither of the two magazines that come with this pistol match. The grips are in good condition with nice checkering. The holster stock is a very nice reproduction and is in fine shape with a cleaning rod.
