Union Army CIVIL WAR Dated 1862 Antique AMES U.S. Model 1860 NAVY CUTLASS
Introduced in 1860 & Used Through 1917
Here we present an antique U.S. Navy U.S. Ames Model 1860 Naval Cutlass, made in 1862, in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. Though the maker’s marking is very worn, it does appear to likely be an Ames Cutlass. The M1860 was a fantastic vessel boarding weapon in its time, and served well in its role in the U.S. Navy during the American Civil War. Only an estimated 25,000 of these were produced during the war, compared to 300,000 of the M1860 Light Cavalry Sword. The cutlass has the distinctive brass, half-basket guard and helmet shaped brass pommel with leather wrapped wooden grip. Introduced in 1860 this cutlass remained the standard Navy edged weapon until a new model was adopted in 1917 and was still found in racks on American naval vessels at the beginning of WWII.
The United States Navy was responsible for the naval blockade that crippled the South by preventing supplies and armaments from getting through from England and France during the American Civil War. The overall length is 32 inches with a blade length of 26 inches, which were both standard lengths for the Ames Cutlass.
The overall condition is good. Straight blade with small bend at the tip. Dark patina throughout. Faint makers mark on one side of the ricasso. Date of 1862 on the other side. Solid hilt. Very thin leather grip wrap with cord and wood showing through.
