TRAP GUN Antique GERMAN LOCK by WILHELM PISTOR .70 Caliber Percussion
Made Circa the Mid-1800s in SCHMALKALDEN, GERMANY
Here we present an antique German Wilhelm Pistol Trap Gun, made circa the mid-1800s in Schmalkalden, Germany. Before being converted to a “Trap Gun”, this would have likely been a German military gun. It is set up to be triggered by the actions of the target taking the bait, which could have been an animal or human.
Today in modern day, the usage of this type of device is considered against the law. In 1971, there was a court case decided by the Iowa Supreme Court, in which two homeowners were held liable for battery for injuries caused to a trespasser who set off a spring gun set as a mantrap in an abandoned house on the homeowners’ property. The case thereafter received wide attention in legal circles, becoming a staple of tort law casebooks and law school courses. But, in the mid to late 1800s, this type of “Trap Gun” was used quite frequently as a deterrent to ne’er do wells!
The lock is marked “PISTOR IN SCHMALKALDEN” This former military weapon has been converted into a trap gun. Probably for animals, but you never know. The bore is smooth and dim. The action is strong. To operate the action one must pull forward on the curved trigger while pushing back on the straight trigger while cocking the hammer. A string tied to the straight trigger would have set the gun off. Barrel length is nearly 9 inches.
