TIFFANY & Co. Antique 1840 CAVALRY Saber with SCABBARD Solingen Luneschloss
Used by the Union During the American Civil War!
Here we present an antique Tiffany & Co. Model 1840 Pattern Mounted Cavalry Saber, made circa the early 1860s in New York, New York. It seems very odd to think that the current Tiffany’s store in New York once dealt in weapons of war. When it comes to swords, the firm is primarily known for presentation grade officer’s swords along with their cavalry sabers. Tiffany dealt almost exclusively in imported blades, most being from Peter D. Luneschloss or Schnitzler and Kirschbaum. This saber would have been a private purchase during the American Civil War by a Union cavalryman or officer.
The overall condition is very good. Bright blade with less than expected wear (minimum to no dings). Tight twisted wires wrap. Solid hilt throughout. A few dents are on the scabbard (minor). “Tiffany & Co./New York” is engraved on the ricasso. “P.D.L.) for Peter D. Luneschloss.
