TACK DECORATED Antique NATIVE AMERICAN Style 20 Gauge “BLANKET GUN” Rawhide
Possibly Native American Trade Gun
Here we present an antique Tack Decorated Native American Style Percussion “Blanket Gun” Carbine, made circa the mid-1800s. The Early American and European countries inhabiting the frontier and remote outposts had to be very careful to sell only obsolescent firearms to the natives so that they could maintain the upper hand should tensions rise. This was likely manufactured in the United States where it was possibly traded to Native Americans in the 1860s to 1870s era.
These types of shotguns, musket, and rifles with cut-down barrels and shortened stocks are referred to by collectors as “blanket rifles” or “blanket guns”. These were so named as they were shortened to fit under a wagon blanket, saddle blanket, or pancho to remain hidden until needed.
The overall condition is fair. No functioning action. Broken nipple. The bore is in good shape for its age. The stock is well-used. The forend and wrist are wrapped with thin buckskin, held in place by brass tacks. The barrel has been shortened.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 16 inches.
