STATE of NEW YORK MILITIA Remington M1871 ROLLING BLOCK Antique .50-70 GOVT
POST-CIVIL WAR Militia Rifle from NEW YORK
Here we present an antique State of New York Militia Remington Rolling Block Rifle, made circa 1872 in Ilion, New York. The Remington Rolling Block rifle is a breech-loading rifle that was produced from the mid-1860s into the early 20th century by E. Remington and Sons (later Remington Arms Company).
The state of New York purchased about 15,000 rolling block rifles and carbines from Remington circa 1872. These can be distinguished by the extremely high curved hammer spur, thumb lever for the breechblock that protrudes outward instead of up and the safety locking action which automatically returns the hammer to half cock when the breech is closed. They used the standard Remington military round top, rolling block action with a 36-inch round barrel in 50-70 CF caliber. The Remington Rolling Block would serve New York until the 1890s, and sources indicate these rolling blocks served with NY Militiamen deployed out West during the Indian Wars.
The overall condition is good. Original finish/patina. The action is excellent. The bore is reflective with strong rifling. The stock shows lots of wear but remains solid. There is a dent in the buttstock on the left side that is a clear impression of a screw head. There are the remnants of 3 cartouches: one on the butt stock that is clear, one on the left wrist which is slightly legible, and the one on the right only the outline of which is discernible. “A” is marked on the right side of the receiver.
