STARR .54 CAVALRY CARBINE Civil War Antique
Circa 1863 Breech Loading Saddle Ring Carbine
Here we present an antique Starr Arms Co. Saddle Ring Percussion Carbine, made circa 1863 in Yonkers, New York. This carbine borrows elements from its contemporaries in some ways, and 20,601 were ordered by the Union during the American Civil War. The style and function certainly reflect the more popular Sharps rifle and carbine. These carbines were known to have been issued, especially in the Western Theater, to the following units: 1st Arkansas, 5th Kansas, 11th Missouri, and 24th New York.
The top of the barrel and the right side of the lock are marked “STARR ARMS CO. YONKERS NY”. Behind the breech is marked “STARR’S PATENT/SEPT. 14 1858”.
The overall condition is good. The iron parts show some residual case colors and original blue finish with a gray patina pervading. The markings are clear. The lever latch is a replacement. The walnut stock is smooth and solid overall, showing old signs of use. The bore is in good shape with strong rifling. The action remains strong.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 21 inches.
