SILVER INLAID, ENGRAVED Antique THOBISCH Percussion CARVED Fowling Piece
NICE European CZECH GABLONZ Smoothbore Sporting Gun
Here we present an antique Engraved, Silver Inlaid, and Carved A. Thobisch Single Barrel Percussion Hammer Shotgun, made sometime in the mid-19th Century in Gablonz, Czechoslovakia. With the elegant structure of this gun, it is more likely to have been owned by someone of stature in Czechoslovakia. It is fairly short 28-1/4 inch 20 gauge barrel would have made for easy hunting in the dense woods or traipsing through the marsh looking for ducks and geese. This would have been a staple of most homesteads hanging over the mantle during the tumultuous times of the mid-1800s. Its primary purpose would have likely been for sporting, though it could have easily been used for putting food on the table or preventing unwanted aggression against the homestead.
The overall condition is good. Original finish and patina throughout. The action will hold both half and full cock but slips out of full cock if the hammer is pushed forward by hand or the trigger is pulled. The bore is smooth and patinated. The stock is beautifully carved with nice gain and remains solid throughout. The sling is in good shape for its age. Ramrod is a replacement.
