Here we present an antique J. Henry Contract Model 1808 Flintlock Musket, manufactured circa 1809 to 1812 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Philadelphia based brothers, John J. and William Henry were among the 19 gun manufacturers contracted by the U.S. government to manufacture the Model 1808 Musket. With the chances of war with Britain increasing, the U.S. Government contracted with numerous private arms manufacturers to begin production of the Model 1808 muskets, after Britain’s firing upon and subsequent boarding of the USS Chesapeake, in 1807. The Henrys signed a contract on June 30, 1808, to supply 10,000 stands of arms at the cost of $10.75 each to be delivered to the Schuylkill Arsenal within five years. According to Peter A. Schmidt, U.S. Military Flintlock Muskets and Their Bayonets, The Early Years 1790-1815, (Woonsocket, R.I.; Andrew Mowbray Publishers, 2006), pp. 188-196), surviving records indicate that they delivered approximately 4,014 muskets by the end of 1812.

The Henrys were the first to receive contracts for muskets under the 1808 militia act. Like most of the other firms to receive contracts, the Henrys ultimately did not fulfill their complete contracts. The guns manufactured by the Henry brothers were based on the Harpers Ferry Armory pattern of 1795.

The War of 1812 was a conflict lasting about three years that was fought between the United States and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The conflict began when the United States declared war in June of 1812 and ended in a restoration of the pre-war status quo when a peace treaty agreed to earlier was ratified by the United States in February 1815. Its eventual consequences included the establishment of a separate Canadian state and an end of hopes for an independent American Indian confederation in the Northwest opening the way for the western expansion of the United States.
