Scarce U.S. HARPERS FERRY ARMORY Hall Model 1819 Breech Loading FLINTLOCK
Original Flintlock Firing System Dated “1838”
Here we present a U.S. Harpers Ferry Hall Breech-Loading Model 1819 Percussion Musket, manufactured in 1838 in Harpers Ferry, Virginia. John Harris Hall was an innovative inventor and forward thinking gunsmith during his time. Aside from his contributions to mass production, Hall also designed and developed the M1819 Hall Rifle that bears his name. Though a single shot long gun, the primary quality of this rifle was its patented breech loading system which allowed the operator to load and reload his weapon at the action as opposed to the muzzle. This meant the shooter no longer had to stand his weapon on its butt and engage in a time-consuming reloading process.
The M1819 Hall Rifle became the first breech loading rifle in the world to be adopted in significant quantities by a national army. In 1819, the United States Army formally adopted the Hall Rifle into inventory, superseding the Harpers Ferry Model 1803 flintlock line, with an order for 1,000 Hall Rifles, thus earning the designation of “Model 1819”. These guns were produced out of the Harpers Ferry Arsenal utilizing Hall’s assemble line methodology. Though this one is its original flintlock state, many of these Model 1819 muskets saw conversion to percussion in the lead into the Civil War, becoming the Model 1841 Hall Rifle. In total, 23,500 Model 1819 Hall Rifles were produced. Hall died long before the war on February 26, 1841, though not before leaving his imprint on firearms and mass production history.
The overall condition is very good. Strong action in the original flintlock. Bright and reflective bore with great rifling. The stock is solid with an average amount of wear and has a repaired chip behind the receiver, where there is usually found this sort of minor damage as a result of the design and recoil. “1838” dated receiver. Clear markings. A great example of a rather scarce Harpers Ferry Model 1819 Hall breech loading rifle, still in its flintlock form!
